Has your tween daughter started asking you about makeup? If so, you might be asking yourself, what is the best makeup for tweens? Or What makeup should 13 year olds wear?  It probably seems like it was just yesterday that you were sending your daughter off to her first day of kindergarten and now she’s asking to try makeup for the first time. Time flies, but don’t panic! Our founder, Sam Cutler, founded Petite’n Pretty for this exact reason. We’ve got your back in this department! Here’s 5 tips for letting your tween wear makeup.

Choose Age Appropriate Eyeshadow Colors For Tweens

It can be difficult to find age appropriate makeup. Colors and packaging might appeal to you and your daughter, but sometimes brands give products some not-so-appropriate names. We recommend our 9021-GLOW Eye and Cheek Palette. The palette features a collection of six age appropriate cheek and eye shades in finishes ranging from amped-up sparkle to dialed-down satins. In addition to eyeshadow shades, the palette includes a blush and highlighter, to give eyes and cheeks the ultimate sheer wash of color. There’s even a dual-ended eye and cheek brush for application. Did we mention it’s Dermatologist-, ophthalmologist- and pediatrician-approved? These are the best eyeshadow colors for tweens.

One parent had this to say about our Glow & Balm Makeup Set:
“The best set for a tween:  My daughter has been wanting to try makeup, but I didn't want to choose anything that would be too drastic for her age. This is a perfect set. It's real makeup, but it's made to highlight the beauty my daughter has already, not cover her with color.”

Find The Right Lip Products for Tweens

When we think lip products, our minds go to lipstick, but should a 12 Year Old Wear Lipstick? Instead of lipstick products with bold colors, go with a lightly tinted gloss or balm for an age appropriate wash of color. We like to give our lip products some age appreciate sparkle and light color, like pink, baby blue, purple. There are also clear options to consider. Our 10k Shine Lip Gloss is the perfect starter lip product. A lightweight, non-sticky lip gloss for tweens with high-shine and ultra-cushion in one swipe. Its signature Cloud Mine™  flavor adds an extra layer of lip-smacking yumminess. 10K Shine™ Lip Gloss is dermatologist- and pediatrician-approved. Think your daughter would prefer a balm instead? Try the Glo$$ Balm Glossy Lip Balm

Here’s what parents had to say about Cloud Mine 10K Shine Lip Gloss:
Cloud Mine 10K Shine Lip Gloss: My daughter loves it! She's 10 years old and it is very age appropriate. It smells great and looks good on her. Best of all, it does not break her out. She has very sensitive skin and various other products break her out but this does not!”

Decide On The Right Mascara For Tweens

Mascara is one of the first makeup products that tweens will ask to wear. We recommend letting them wear either a clear or regular black mascara. The trick is to not overdo it. Petite’n Pretty’s Fully Feathered Mascara is specifically made for kids. The average kid’s eyes are 2 mm smaller than the average adults. Our mascara wand is 2 mm smaller than the top volumizing wand for grownups. The hourglass applicator is designed to separate lash by lash for a full-feathered fringe look. If you’re not quite ready to let your tween use colored mascara, try the Featherlight Clear Mascara and Brow Gel. This mascara and brow sets brows and emphasizes lashes for a natural look. Both products are proven safe, dermatologist- and pediatrician-approved

Select The Right Kids Makeup Brand

Finding kids' makeup is tricky. Some kids' makeup is too amateur or looks more like a toy than something safe for application. When selecting the right kids cosmetics brand, some things to consider might be whether or not your child has a nut allergy or sensitive skin and eyes. Look for non-toxic, dermatologist approved, nut free, and ophthalmologist tested makeup products. It also doesn’t hurt if a brand is cruelty free and made in the USA *wink wink*!

Teach Your Tween How To Apply Makeup

Sometimes letting your tween just go at it without any help can be disastrous. Think about all those embarrassing photos we have of ourselves wearing blue eyeshadow and way too much mascara (hello spider lashes). Consider signing her up for makeup classes for tweens. Petite’n Pretty offers virtual makeup classes for kids that you and your child can enjoy! The 1 hour virtual 1:1 makeup class is tailored to your child's experience level and focuses on teaching them to master age appropriate makeup techniques with a Petite ‘n Pretty pro. Don’t think she’s ready for a class just yet, print out one of our free downloadable face charts and let her practice on that!

There you have it, 5 tips to help your daughter try makeup the right way! We know that this can be a little difficult to navigate, but it can also be a lot of fun for you and your daughter! Makeup can bring out your child’s creative side and help them express themselves in an age appropriate way that you can both take part in, from choosing the products to learning how to apply them together.
